How to play a word guessing game
A hidden word, six tries, and three colours that tell you how close you are. The rules fit in five lines.
A word guessing game hides a word of a known length. You type a real word of the same length. The game then colours each letter to tell you what it knows. You use those colours to guess better on the next row, until you find the word or run out of tries.
The rules of Motrix
- Choose a length from 4 to 8 letters, or open the word of the day.
- The first letter is given on every row.
- Type a real word of that length. When the row is full, it is checked.
- Read the colours, then try again on the next row.
- Find the word within six tries to win.
The three colours
- Red square: the letter is in the word, in this place.
- Yellow circle: the letter is in the word, in another place.
- Grey tile: the letter is not in the word.
The shapes say the same thing as the colours. A colour-blind player reads the grid like anyone else: a filled square is right, a circle is elsewhere.
Letters that appear twice
If you type a letter twice and the word has it once, only one of the two is marked: red if one is in the right place, otherwise yellow. The other one is grey. If the word has it twice, both can be coloured.
The keyboard remembers
The keys take the colours of your tries: red, yellow or grey. A grey key is a letter you can leave aside. Tap the ? at the top of the game to see the rules again.
